Review: Happy Family Conditions Apply (Web Series)

As someone said "There’s nothing that makes you more insane than family, or more happy, or more exasperated, or more secure." True to this statement, no family is completely happy or 100% perfect. It is a mix of every emotion that binds everyone in the family together. At the end, family is family!!!

The web series Happy Family Conditions Apply portrays the same. This Hindi language series is directed and produced by film-makers Jamnadas Majethia and Aatish Kapadia of the Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai fame; and the star cast includes seasoned actors like Raj Babbar, Ratna Pathak Shah, Atul Kulkarni, Ayesha Jhulka in key roles, supported by Raunaq Kamdar, Meenal Sahu, Sanah Kapur etc. This is one of the titles Amazon Prime India announced in April last year.

Unlike other series, Amazon released only the first 4 episodes of Happy Family on the 10th March 2023 and went on to air the remaining 6 episodes, 2 episodes on every Friday, with the last 2 released on 31st Mar. It is a family comedy entertainer, which revolves around the lives of Dholakias, a Gujarathi family of four generations, living in a joint family set up. This series presents how messy families are, how each individual is different and how everyone is held together in the family, despite different personalities.

Manuskhlal Dholakia (Raj Babbar) and Hemlatha Dholakia (Ratna Pathak Shah) have two sons - Ramesh (Atul Kulkarni) and Suresh (Atul Kumar) and a daughter Falu. Ramesh is a chemist, married to Pallavi (Ayesha Jhulka) and has two children - Sanjouy and Ayushi. Sanjouy is married to Tisca, a fashion designer by profession and together have a kid. In a family outing, Sanjouy informs that he has purchased a new flat and will be moving out of the house soon, the decision leaving Ramesh heart broken. Sooner the family is shaken up with another discovery that Suresh, residing in US married a Kenyan-American in Las Vegas much to the disapproval of Hemlatha. As we navigate through the episodes, we witness how disoriented everyone in the family is and their relationships are.

Star ensemble is perfect and so are their performances. Raj Babbar true to a head of the family is the back bone of the Dholakias and identifies and resolves the issues, as they creep in. Ratna Pathak Shah, who garnered a special fan base for her role in Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai has been perfect in the role of Baa - stereotypical, dramatic and hilarious. She is definitely the show stealer of this series. Atul, Ayesha and the rest are just apt for their role and performed per the character's demand. Of course, one will definitely feel that not every actor's potential is fully utilized. That's true especially with Atul, as we know how great a performer he is.

The director wanted to bring in a wholesome family drama onto the screen, while trying to recreate the magic of his past successful sitcom. He has nearly succeeded in delivering a story loaded with slapstick comedy and family emotions, without any vulgarity or zero violence, which are the loaded in today's world of so called entertainment. Happy Family is the story of the family who are a little bit crazy, a little bit loud and full of love for each other!!!

After my recent experience of watching disastrous and hopeless movies and series especially those like Rana Naidu, where I couldn't stand even 10 minutes of the first episode, Happy Family with a lighter subject, hilarious comedy, wholesome drama and entertainment, is a good and must watch; of course conditions apply*.

* Well, this series too has its flaws - characters getting over dramatic at times especially Falu and her husband; more than the Dholakia's family, the last episode seemed highly disoriented. Till then the momentum of the series was good. In the 10th episode, due to an unexpected situation, everyone in the Dholakia family spill out their personal secrets, in the final 10 minutes of their lives. But dramatically, they all survive and end up messing their lives for worse, due to those long kept secrets. If the director's intention was to lay the foundation for the next season, he should have executed it better. Sadly, audience were served kichidi, instead of the spicy fried rice they expected, in "The last supper"!!!

Review: Anex Monkey Smart Watch

Hello Readers,  Welcome back. While browsing through a weekly flyer by Canadian Tire, my eyes got hold of a smart watch, primarily for its name - Monkey Smart Watch. It's original price was $89.99. On account of Father's Day, the price was slashed 70% and offered for just $24.99 (from June 9th to June 16th).  As it was listed on Canadian Tire website, I thought the product should be genuine and googled to know more about the product. But there weren't sufficient reviews online. So I decided to try it myself and booked it online. This smart watch was launched in the last quarter of 2021 as Anex Monkey Smart Watch. Last year, it had been sold for just $19.99 as part of Black Friday deal. Even after 5 days of waiting, Canadian Tire didn't process my order. On the other hand, the stock was vanishing real quick and only 80 watches were available in our near by store. When checked with their customer service executive, I was told to cancel my online order or wait until they p...

Book: One Arranged Murder by Chetan Bhagat

It's been quite a while I read Chetan Bhagat's novel. When I searched for his recent publishes, I was surprised to see two titles that missed my notice - One Arranged Murder and 400 days were published in the years 2020 and 2021 respectively. I have read most of Chetan Bhagat's fictional novels right after their release. His writing style is very simple, witty and free-flowing; his characters are so relatable, like the girl next door or one from our friends gang or simply just like us; most appealing aspect of his works is the story that makes us wanting to read through the end in a single sitting. For most of us, Chetan Bhagat became a house hold name after the release and success of the Bollywood's comical drama, 3 Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hirani. This movie is based on Bhagat's first fictional novel Five Point Someone, with Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in the lead roles. For those unfamiliar, Chetan Bhagat is an Indian Author, columnist and youtuber....

Book: First They Killed My Father

"First They Killed My Father" was on my To Be Read (TBR) list for sometime. Finally, I read it as part of my book goals for the year 2021. It is a heart wrenching memoir written by Loung Ung, who survived the Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia.  The story starts off with Loung narrating her family and life at Phnom Penh before communists took over Cambodia; their family fleeing Phnom Penh due to Khmer Rouge’s attack; the struggles their family encounters while travelling from one village to the other, concealing their identity for survival; their ordeal working for Khmer Rouge. In the due course, Loung’s father gets killed, her family gets separated with Loung ending up in the Khmer Rouge troop as a child soldier. By the time Cambodia is liberated, Loung also loses her mother, 2 sisters and finally unites with rest of her siblings. The books ends with Loung migrating to the United States along with her elder brother and sister-in-law. It is a very well written book ...

10 things to do after reaching Canada

Congratulations!!! Finally, you have received your COPR or work visa or student visa, packed your bags, said good byes to family and friends and boarded the flight to your dream country - Canada. There are few essential activities to do immediately after reaching Canada, which  puts you in a better position and gives you the much needed peace. I am listing 10 such activities to accomplish, preferably within the first few weeks. 1. Finding an accommodation: Accommodation is the first thing you would need to head straight from the airport. So better to get it sorted before leaving for Canada.  If you have relatives or friends at Canada, then it would be the best option to stay with them for a week or two, find an accommodation and move out. Alternatively you can consider staying at Airbnbs until you hunt a house. Airbnbs are budget-friendly compared to hotels.  Check out websites like kijiji , craigl ist , facebook,  indianeverywhere   etc. You will get lot of o...

Recipe: Idiyappam | Sevai | String Hoppers

Idiyappam, is a well known break fast item in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka. It is also known as sevai or string hoppers (in English) and is primarily made out of rice floor. Like idli, idiyappam is made through steaming using no oil, making it very easily digestible and light on stomach.  When I think about idiyappam, I remember 2 instances from my childhood. One of my friend's mom, used to feed her 2 year old with different colourful sevais for evening snack - white, yellow, red along with a liquid version of it too, almost 3-4 times in a week. Later I learnt from her elder daughter (my friend) that they are coconut sevai (sweet version), lemon sevai, tomato sevai and rasam sevai. Though born and brought up in Chennai, we aren't much into idiyappams.  I don't remember eating them until I crossed 10 years. Whenever we visit a doctor with fever, our doctor used to give a list of food items - kanji, bread, idli, idiyappam and rasam rice, which I was usually averse to even...
