TEMU - Is it Legit or Scam???

TEMU is the latest buzzword, shaking up the North American ecommerce world!!!!

How many of you have been constantly receiving ads, notifications in your emails and all of your social media platforms about TEMU? Until a few days ago, I haven't heard the word "TEMU". If someone talked to me about it, I would have brushed off the conversation thinking it is just another scam. When I received the first email, that was my immediate reaction and deleted it. But after few more notifications, I got curious and started digging about it, only to realize that it is an ecommerce app similar to Aliexpress, Wish, Shein etc. selling products at lower prices.

Since China is ruling the ecommerce market, I naturally thought TEMU should also be part of China's ecommerce ecosystem, and my guess was right. Though TEMU is headquartered at Boston, this online retailer is a subsidiary of Pinduoduo (PDD), Chinese ecommerce giant with close to 900 million users. So technically, TEMU is supposed to be a completely safe and a legitimate website to shop from.

PDD has launched TEMU in the United States in Sept 2022, with an aim to take over the American market, despite the political unrest between both the countries. TEMU has entered into the Canadian ecommerce space too, on 3rd Feb this year and currently these are the only two geographies TEMU is operating. TEMU is selling leather jackets for $24.29, Lenovo earbuds for $7.98, sports shoe for $6.69, smart watch for as less as $1.99 etc. (All prices stated here are in USD). Continue to read this article to know more about how TEMU is offering goods at such low prices.

TEMU stands for "Team Up, Price Down".

  • It sells products directly from Chinese workshops/ vendors to the consumers, thereby eliminating middlemen's involvement. Since the product is directly shipped from China to America/ Canada, there is no inventory and hence no warehouse cost and the related operating cost. That's how TEMU is able to offer such lower prices.
  • Unlike Aliexpress or Wish, they do not do drop shipping, and so they don't have to look out for inventory after receiving the order. This enables them to have greater control over their product listing and are promising faster deliveries unlike Wish and AliExpress, where the delivery could take weeks together and sometimes months.
  • In addition, TEMU is also offering the customer a credit of $5 if it couldn't meet the delivery time promised at the time of ordering.

TEMU has been the most downloaded app in the United States (24 million downloads) since its launch and has been implementing great strategies to spread its wings faster. It's picking up faster in Canada too. In just a month, the app downloads have crossed 10 million in the country. Attractive ads across all the social media platforms, up to 90% discounts as part of its grand launching in the US and Canada, free shipping and returns up to 90 days, $5 credit for missed delivery dates, additional promotional offers (coupon codes) through social media influencers etc.

Its biggest and the intelligent move was its Super Bowl debut just a couple of weeks back. TEMU displayed a commercial during the game encouraging the audience to "shop like a billionaire", where you really don't have to be one😀CNN reported that a TEMU's spokesperson quoted “Through the largest stage possible, we want to share with our consumers that they can shop with a sense of freedom because of the price we offer”.

It's too early to judge or conclude whether TEMU will be able to maintain the low prices, free shipping and other offers in the long run or all these just their strategy to capture the market early on.

We find wide range of goods on TEMU's website - Home & Kitchen, Electronics, Sports, Toys and games, Bags and luggage, beauty and health, arts and crafts, gardening etc. all at very attractive prices. There had been mixed review from the customers though. While many are extremely satisfied with the products and prices, few have had not so good to worst experiences with respect to product quality, shipping and returns. Another catch is about shipping, we have to place a minimum order of $20 to avail free shipping.

Every beginning, every new attempt will have to face a fair share of criticism and will be looked with raised brows initially. "These prices are too good to be true", "The product quality won't be good", "I doubt the goods will be delivered", "This is just another scam", "I don't want cheaper quality products" etc. are the likely thoughts that immediately flash in our minds looking at TEMU.

I reserve my comment as I am waiting to receive my first order from TEMU and shall share my review about the products and process soon. So watch out this space. Until then, happy reading and happy shopping!!!

Gearing up for First day of School

The day you first held your little one, the first time he smiled at you, those first steps, first tears, first words, first bike ride... You would have experienced countless firsts with your child so far. Before you knew it, your kid is just few days away from a very important milestone - his first day of school.  If your kid is starting kindergarten this academic year, I totally feel you. I was in the same state of mind, exactly an year ago. After tending to my son for more than 3 years, that too as a stay at home mom, he is very attached to me. I was with him literally 24 x 7, except for those very few minutes I sneak into the washroom. The thought of how he would survive those 7 hours of school without me, haunted me for days. Next his preparedness to face the whole new world (without us) was dreadful. I had infinite questions/ doubts in my head. It is quite natural if you have an endless loop going on in your head. In this post, I sum up my experience of preparing my child and ...

Book: First They Killed My Father

"First They Killed My Father" was on my To Be Read (TBR) list for sometime. Finally, I read it as part of my book goals for the year 2021. It is a heart wrenching memoir written by Loung Ung, who survived the Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia.  The story starts off with Loung narrating her family and life at Phnom Penh before communists took over Cambodia; their family fleeing Phnom Penh due to Khmer Rouge’s attack; the struggles their family encounters while travelling from one village to the other, concealing their identity for survival; their ordeal working for Khmer Rouge. In the due course, Loung’s father gets killed, her family gets separated with Loung ending up in the Khmer Rouge troop as a child soldier. By the time Cambodia is liberated, Loung also loses her mother, 2 sisters and finally unites with rest of her siblings. The books ends with Loung migrating to the United States along with her elder brother and sister-in-law. It is a very well written book ...

Hospital bag checklist for delivery

Do you know when the baby is arriving? But not sure what to pack for the labor? Don't worry. I got you covered with a checklist on what to carry to hospital for you, your newborn and your partner (or support person).                                                     Below list will be very exhaustive. In a country like US, most of the items listed here will be provided by hospitals, based on your insurance coverage. At Canada, where healthcare is publicly funded, you might have to carry most of them. In India, some corporate hospitals provide basic essentials, however one has to plan and carry the rest. On the whole, I would suggest talk to your doctor or hospital help desk in advance to know what you might have to bring. That would be the starting point. Also have separate bags for you, baby ...

Book: To All The Boys I've Loved Before

It's been a very long time since I read a romantic novel. I came across this book and looking at the title, felt it should be interesting. True to my intuition, "To all the boys I've loved before" written by Jenny Han , was an enjoyable read.                                                               Just to give a sneak peak into the novel, it is the story of a teenager named Lara Jean. She is the middle one amongst three sisters and has a habit of writing love letters to the boys she has a crush on. Instead of giving it to the boys, she secretly stores them in a hatbox in her room. One day her younger sister, posts all those letters to the boys. Amongst those letters, one was addressed to their elder sister's boyfriend. Rest of the story is how Lara handles the consequences and stops the impend...

What is in a diaper bag?

Hello Momma, are you heading out with your tiny tot to the park or doctor's office or visiting your friend's family or going on a day trip? Wherever you go, don't miss out to bring your new companion -  the diaper bag .  It is a bag with multiple compartments to organize all the essentials of baby and mom while travelling short distances. If you prefer, you may carry your belongings separately. However I don't like to handle too many bags while travelling with my kid and so I pack one bag for both of us. Like what you read? Follow me on  YouTube  for fresh videos and updates on every new post! Diaper bag checklist: First, let us take a look at the items that have to be in a diaper bag. Diapers:  Pack a diaper for every 2-3 hours you plan to spend outside. Once you are familiar with your child's routine (specifically their poop timings), you will know how many diapers to carry. But always carry 2 additional diapers for contingency. Once you are out with a kid, be...
