TEMU - Is it Legit or Scam???

TEMU is the latest buzzword, shaking up the North American ecommerce world!!!!

How many of you have been constantly receiving ads, notifications in your emails and all of your social media platforms about TEMU? Until a few days ago, I haven't heard the word "TEMU". If someone talked to me about it, I would have brushed off the conversation thinking it is just another scam. When I received the first email, that was my immediate reaction and deleted it. But after few more notifications, I got curious and started digging about it, only to realize that it is an ecommerce app similar to Aliexpress, Wish, Shein etc. selling products at lower prices.

Since China is ruling the ecommerce market, I naturally thought TEMU should also be part of China's ecommerce ecosystem, and my guess was right. Though TEMU is headquartered at Boston, this online retailer is a subsidiary of Pinduoduo (PDD), Chinese ecommerce giant with close to 900 million users. So technically, TEMU is supposed to be a completely safe and a legitimate website to shop from.

PDD has launched TEMU in the United States in Sept 2022, with an aim to take over the American market, despite the political unrest between both the countries. TEMU has entered into the Canadian ecommerce space too, on 3rd Feb this year and currently these are the only two geographies TEMU is operating. TEMU is selling leather jackets for $24.29, Lenovo earbuds for $7.98, sports shoe for $6.69, smart watch for as less as $1.99 etc. (All prices stated here are in USD). Continue to read this article to know more about how TEMU is offering goods at such low prices.

TEMU stands for "Team Up, Price Down".

  • It sells products directly from Chinese workshops/ vendors to the consumers, thereby eliminating middlemen's involvement. Since the product is directly shipped from China to America/ Canada, there is no inventory and hence no warehouse cost and the related operating cost. That's how TEMU is able to offer such lower prices.
  • Unlike Aliexpress or Wish, they do not do drop shipping, and so they don't have to look out for inventory after receiving the order. This enables them to have greater control over their product listing and are promising faster deliveries unlike Wish and AliExpress, where the delivery could take weeks together and sometimes months.
  • In addition, TEMU is also offering the customer a credit of $5 if it couldn't meet the delivery time promised at the time of ordering.

TEMU has been the most downloaded app in the United States (24 million downloads) since its launch and has been implementing great strategies to spread its wings faster. It's picking up faster in Canada too. In just a month, the app downloads have crossed 10 million in the country. Attractive ads across all the social media platforms, up to 90% discounts as part of its grand launching in the US and Canada, free shipping and returns up to 90 days, $5 credit for missed delivery dates, additional promotional offers (coupon codes) through social media influencers etc.

Its biggest and the intelligent move was its Super Bowl debut just a couple of weeks back. TEMU displayed a commercial during the game encouraging the audience to "shop like a billionaire", where you really don't have to be one😀CNN reported that a TEMU's spokesperson quoted “Through the largest stage possible, we want to share with our consumers that they can shop with a sense of freedom because of the price we offer”.

It's too early to judge or conclude whether TEMU will be able to maintain the low prices, free shipping and other offers in the long run or all these just their strategy to capture the market early on.

We find wide range of goods on TEMU's website - Home & Kitchen, Electronics, Sports, Toys and games, Bags and luggage, beauty and health, arts and crafts, gardening etc. all at very attractive prices. There had been mixed review from the customers though. While many are extremely satisfied with the products and prices, few have had not so good to worst experiences with respect to product quality, shipping and returns. Another catch is about shipping, we have to place a minimum order of $20 to avail free shipping.

Every beginning, every new attempt will have to face a fair share of criticism and will be looked with raised brows initially. "These prices are too good to be true", "The product quality won't be good", "I doubt the goods will be delivered", "This is just another scam", "I don't want cheaper quality products" etc. are the likely thoughts that immediately flash in our minds looking at TEMU.

I reserve my comment as I am waiting to receive my first order from TEMU and shall share my review about the products and process soon. So watch out this space. Until then, happy reading and happy shopping!!!

Rutabaga: An Underrated Superfood & A Delicious Indian Recipe To Try!

Trying something new can feel uncertain, whether it is a new routine or new job or new city or even a new vegetable, as we often find comfort in the familiar. I had reservations about this particular vegetable until I cooked and tasted it. Let me introduce you Rutabaga, a lesser known vegetable (at least for a person from tropical region like me). It is nutrient-rich, flavourful and incredibly easy to prepare.                                              When I first saw Rutabaga in the grocery stores here, I thought it would be from the yam family and ignored it, primarily because of its starch content. In addition, Rutabaga's sheer size always made me think twice to try it. In India, grocery stores sell small portions of vegetables like yam, cabbage or pumpkin, allowing customers purchase only what they need, which is...

Keep Rutabaga Fresh! Storage Tips & 2 Indian Recipes You'll Love

Stepping beyond our usual choices in kitchen can open up a world of exciting flavors and nutrients. All it takes is to try a new vegetable or a cooking style to add novelty to our daily meals. Rutabaga, a vegetable I haven't explored before turned out to be a delightful discovery. If you haven't read my previous article on rutabaga, be sure to check it out here . It gives you a wholistic look at this underrated super vegetable along with a lip smacking Indian-style Rutabaga fry recipe you won't want to miss.  Apart from the fry, I prepared a flavorful Andhra-style karam pulusu and a comforting Tamil-style kootu using rutabaga. Surprisingly, both dishes turned out even more delicious than the fry! If I had to rank all the three recipes, the rutabaga pulusu would easily take the top spot—it was simply irresistible! How to store rutabaga for weeks? Rutabagas come in all sizes, but the smaller ones can be more bitter and the bigger ones could be woody and tough to cut. So go fo...

Review: Anex Monkey Smart Watch

Hello Readers,  Welcome back. While browsing through a weekly flyer by Canadian Tire, my eyes got hold of a smart watch, primarily for its name - Monkey Smart Watch. It's original price was $89.99. On account of Father's Day, the price was slashed 70% and offered for just $24.99 (from June 9th to June 16th).  As it was listed on Canadian Tire website, I thought the product should be genuine and googled to know more about the product. But there weren't sufficient reviews online. So I decided to try it myself and booked it online. This smart watch was launched in the last quarter of 2021 as Anex Monkey Smart Watch. Last year, it had been sold for just $19.99 as part of Black Friday deal. Even after 5 days of waiting, Canadian Tire didn't process my order. On the other hand, the stock was vanishing real quick and only 80 watches were available in our near by store. When checked with their customer service executive, I was told to cancel my online order or wait until they p...

Book: The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

After reading a lot of positive recommendations about this title, I wanted to read it last year. However more than 100 people in our community library, eager like me have blocked this book, making it certain to move this book to my TBR 2022. Though I had a soft copy, I waited for the hardcover. The joy of holding the book in hands is incomparable. Don't you agree? Finally, its my turn at the library!! The Silent Patient is authored by Alex Michaelides who is an author and screenwriter. He is half Cyrian-half British. Alex is an M.A. in English Literature, M.A. in screenwriting and holds a degree in psychotherapy. He has worked as a therapist in a psychiatric unit for teenagers and has been the inspiration for writing this book. The Silent Patient is his debut novel with more than million copies sold world over and is rated as the New York Times and Sunday Times best seller. This work has fetched him the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Mystery & Thriller of 2019 and has been sho...

Brantford Twin Valley Zoo, Ontario

We are left with just few more weeks of summer and couple more beautiful places to explore, before we bid good bye to the season this year. Twin Valley Zoo at Brantford (Ontario, Canada) is one such place which was on our bucket list for this summer. At Canada, we cannot spot any other animal in our neighbourhood beyond pet dogs, cats and the ever active squirrels that freely roam wherever their heart takes them. If we are lucky, we may also get a chance to find few horses in their stables when we pass through the country side.  While I was in the US, I visited a pet zoo in our locality, which housed a cow, sheep, goat, hen, rooster, few chicken, duck and a goose, specifically to introduce them to kids; which was quite amusing. A person like me who has grown up seeing domestic animals and birds like cows, buffalos, sheep, goat, hens, ducks etc. in the neighbourhood (in India), I found this particularly odd. Of course, today, we don't get to see these beings in the city si...
