Blue or Pink ??

I am sure, looking at the title of the post, you would have guessed what I am going to discuss today. When we were expecting our baby, we were living in the US. Though we had an opportunity to know the gender of our baby, we chose not to, to retain the suspense and have the guess work on by us and everyone around us, till the moment the baby arrived.

I remember my friends, relatives, colleagues, strangers at grocery stores, passers-by on my way to work and routine walks, used to predict the gender; few backed by science, few based on old wives tales and few based on their personal experiences. Needless to say those conversations were quite interesting and funny.

I am sharing few of those fancy predictions here. Read it with a notion to have fun and do not take it too seriously.

Morning sickness: If a tale is to be believed, you are nurturing a baby girl, if you are having terrible time to retain even an ounce of water inside, during your first trimester; you are going to pop out a boy, in case you do not have traces of nausea and morning sickness.

Fetus heartbeat rate: Per one theory, if the fetus heart beats more than 140 times per minute, it is guessed to be a girl, else a boy.

Appetite: You can expect a baby boy, if you keep making frequent kitchen trips in search of food; as I am told, boys need more calories to grow in comparison to girls.

Mom's tastebuds: If the very word of sweet makes you drool and munch on something sweet, then the bun in your oven may be a girl. On the contrary, if you like enjoy eating salt and spicy food all the time, be sure to have a dude.

Baby bump: Old wives say, carrying low means a baby boy; while carrying high is a sign your little munchkin is going to be a girl. Also a round belly signals a boy is on the way and if your preggy belly looks like you are carrying all over, it is indicates a girl.

Look of your face: Expectant mom who radiates a special glow is told to be carrying a boy, and the one whose charming looks and beautiful skin is lost during pregnancy, is going to welcome a girl baby. As per an old story, girl babies take away the good looks of her mom. But I guess per science, it is got to do with the different hormonal changes a mom experiences based on the fetal gender. But don't be scared. You will regain your looks on the arrival of our your princess!!

Pregnancy brain: Most women experience memory problems while they are pregnant. This is linked to hormonal changes, anxiety, stress, sleeplessness during pregnancy. A research states that women carrying girl baby will be extremely forgetful. So don't forget to paint the nursery pink.

Mood swings: If you are experiencing intense mood swings since inception, it indicates you are going to have a beautiful girl. If you are more composed, you are more likely to have a handsome boy.

Gestational diabetes: Higher blood glucose levels is more common in women pregnant with a baby boy, again the hormones are to be blamed!! Per what I observed amongst my known circle is that 7 in 10 Moms with gestational diabetes delivered boys, while 2 in 10 gave birth to girl babies.

Gestational age: Baby girls complete full term in a mother’s womb i.e., they are typically born after 38 weeks. However, if you expect labor pains or your water breaks right after you complete 36 weeks, consider you are going to hold your prince in your arms, within hours.

Are you able to relate to any of these? We all know the predictions have 50/50 chances. Don't stop the guessing game and miss out on the fun. Anyways, we get to see what it turns out be sooner!!

Did Kate Williams Read My Mind? My Review of How to Stop Trying

I am sure we all would have heard this statement more than once in our lives from our parents, teachers, siblings, friends, spouse or even a boss: “Try and try till you achieve your dream or target.” It could be finding the job of your liking, marrying the person you desire, or earning that long-awaited promotion. For many of us, these words become the script of our lives - pushing us to always chase the next milestone, to measure our worth by achievements. But what happens when the constant “trying” becomes exhausting? That's the side of the story untold. What is this book about? This is what Kate Williams’ "How to Stop Trying: An Overachiever's Guide to Self-Acceptance, Letting Go, and Other Impossible Things" talks about. The book isn’t about throwing away ambitions or giving up on our dreams. Instead, it’s about recognizing the hidden cost of endless striving - the burn out, the inability to rest without guilt, the constant sense of “not enough” and learning how t...

Review: Anex Monkey Smart Watch

Hello Readers,  Welcome back. While browsing through a weekly flyer by Canadian Tire, my eyes got hold of a smart watch, primarily for its name - Monkey Smart Watch. It's original price was $89.99. On account of Father's Day, the price was slashed 70% and offered for just $24.99 (from June 9th to June 16th).  As it was listed on Canadian Tire website, I thought the product should be genuine and googled to know more about the product. But there weren't sufficient reviews online. So I decided to try it myself and booked it online. This smart watch was launched in the last quarter of 2021 as Anex Monkey Smart Watch. Last year, it had been sold for just $19.99 as part of Black Friday deal. Even after 5 days of waiting, Canadian Tire didn't process my order. On the other hand, the stock was vanishing real quick and only 80 watches were available in our near by store. When checked with their customer service executive, I was told to cancel my online order or wait until they p...

Handling Winters in Canada

Winters in Canada will be very cold and snowy, with a varying degree of intensity across the country, ranging from -5° C to - 50° C. Reflecting upon 2025!!

Just a few hours remain before we flip open a new page on a fresh calendar. As I sat sipping hot water, watching my son absorbed in a drawing that had caught his fancy, a quiet thought crossed my mind - what did 2025 really give me, and what did it change within me? Like most years, 2025 arrived as a mixed bag. It offered moments of joy and gratitude, alongside phases of discomfort and challenge. Some of the brighter glimpses - the places I visited, the books I managed to read, the thoughts I shared - are already scattered across my YouTube and Instagram spaces. What I tend to keep private, however, are the harder chapters. This year was particularly demanding on my health and mental well-being. Navigating life as an immigrant, a parent, and a stay-at-home mother came with its own set of quiet battles. Yet, if there is one lesson 2025 gently but firmly taught me, it is this: even in the most exhausting seasons, hope exists . Sometimes, all it takes is a little courage to stay put, br...

Why I Write - Q&A with Manu

I keep getting direct and indirect questions on Why I Write? There won't be a better occasion than this to address this Q and other frequently asked Qs. It's been exactly 2 years since I started this website -  Manu's Medley  and apparently this is my 100th blog post.  So Why I Write?  I can give a fancier reply stating "I chose to follow my passion". But I won't, as it isn't true. After being in the IT industry for more than a decade, working tirelessly all through the weeks, months and years, I moved to Canada carrying my little one, when the whole world was witnessing one of the deadliest diseases COVID. It was at the same time, I had to take a career break due to few compelling personal reasons and decided to be a full time mom.  It's a new place and a new role, with almost zero support, unlike the support system at India. To top it, the lockdowns and restrictions were never ending. The three of us spent months together within our apartment and my ...
