Dil Bekaraar - Enjoyable Family Drama

Dil Bekaraar, is a comedy family drama series, released this November on Disney+ Hotstar. The trailer which appeared to be set up in 1980s background was compelling. It is the adoption of novel "Those Pricey Thakur Girls" written by Anuja Chauhan. These two reasons were convincing enough for me to watch the series.

Directed by Habib Faisal, the story revolves around the family of retired Justice LN Thakur and his five daughters, based at New Delhi and love story between the protagonists.  The cast includes Raj Babbar (LN Thakur), Poonam Dhillon (Mamta, LN Thakur's wife), Akshay Oberoi (Dylan Singh Shekhawat, protagonist), Sahher Bambha (Debjani aka Dabbu - one of Thakur's daughter and Dylan's love interest), Padmini Kolhapure (Thakur's brother's wife), Chandrachur Singh (Health Minister).

Dylan is a journalist, striving hard to prove himself by writing a powerful byline. He is the son of LN Thakur's close friend. Debjani is an aspiring English newsreader at Deshdarpan (Doordarshan). The story is not just limited to the romance between Dylan and Debjani, but includes comedy and drama amongst Thakur's pariwar and a political plot that led to Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984, which Dylan tries to expose.

While the family drama and romance tries to capture the viewers attention, the comedy and political elements doesn't. I felt, the characters of LN Thakur's brother (AN Thakur), his cuss word speaking and paan chewing wife, his maid with whom he has an extra-marital affair, his son who is projected as very feeble and trying to become a man (mard), could have been downplayed. Instead of investing time on these characters, director could have strengthened the political plot. The last episode was highly dramatic and messy.

But I wouldn't complain much, as this series is a treat for those who love to relive 80s memories. Gold spot, Campa Cola, telegrams, typewriters, cordless phones, video games, old currency notes, of course everyone's favourite Doordarshan (renamed as Deshdarpan in this series) and soothing old melody songs, will surely take you back in time. I should admit, I felt disappointed for not able to hear the montage tune of Doordarshan.

On the whole, Dil Bekaraar is an enjoyable family drama and surely takes you back to the good old days 😍

Review: Farzi (Web Series)

Indian web series aren't new to us. Recently, multi-starrer web series, that too combination of performers from North-South film industries is on the raise. Farzi falls into the same category, with Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi foraying into web series along with Bollywood's heartthrob Shahid Kapoor. Farzi (meaning Fake), is an Indian crime thriller web series, from the creators of Family Man series - Raj and DK. It is released in Amazon Prime on 10th Feb 2023, in multiple Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada). Book: To All The Boys I've Loved Before

It's been a very long time since I read a romantic novel. I came across this book and looking at the title, felt it should be interesting. True to my intuition, "To all the boys I've loved before" written by Jenny Han , was an enjoyable read.                                                               Just to give a sneak peak into the novel, it is the story of a teenager named Lara Jean. Brantford Twin Valley Zoo, Ontario

We are left with just few more weeks of summer and couple more beautiful places to explore, before we bid good bye to the season this year. Twin Valley Zoo at Brantford (Ontario, Canada) is one such place which was on our bucket list for this summer. At Canada, we cannot spot any other animal in our neighbourhood beyond pet dogs, cats and the ever active squirrels that freely roam wherever their heart takes them. If we are lucky, we may also get a chance to find few horses in their stables when we pass through the country side.  While I was in the US, I visited a pet zoo in our locality, which housed a cow, sheep, goat, hen, rooster, few chicken, duck and a goose, specifically to introduce them to kids; which was quite amusing. Book: First They Killed My Father

"First They Killed My Father" was on my To Be Read (TBR) list for sometime. Finally, I read it as part of my book goals for the year 2021. It is a heart wrenching memoir written by Loung Ung, who survived the Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia.  The story starts off with Loung narrating her family and life at Phnom Penh before communists took over Cambodia; their family fleeing Phnom Penh due to Khmer Rouge’s attack; the struggles their family encounters while travelling from one village to the other, concealing their identity for survival; their ordeal working for Khmer Rouge. In the due course, Loung’s father gets killed, her family gets separated with Loung ending up in the Khmer Rouge troop as a child soldier. By the time Cambodia is liberated, Loung also loses her mother, 2 sisters and finally unites with rest of her siblings.
